New Jersey gas over a week, a month or the yearHow New Jersey Gas Price Markets Settle
Every New Jersey gas price contract on this page settles on one number: AAA's average price for a gallon of regular gasoline across New Jersey, as AAA posts it on its New Jersey page at gasprices.aaa.com. The daily series, KXAAAGASDNJ, asks about one calendar date at a time, and the exchange names AAA as its sole source agency.
Under the exchange's AAAGAS contract terms, the value that counts is the one AAA has documented at the contract's expiration time on that date. AAA can revise a figure later; the contract ignores the revision. A date with no AAA reading falls back to the most recent day that has one. Trading stops at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on the eve of the named date, before the number exists.
Because it is a state average, the figure describes New Jersey as a whole. The price at any one station can differ from it, and AAA's separate mid-grade, premium and diesel averages never enter the contract.
How to Read the New Jersey Gas Price Board
The daily New Jersey gas price board is a ladder. Every rung poses the same yes-or-no question at a different price: will AAA's state average for the date come in strictly above this level? Rungs are spaced half a cent apart, which is why the odds step down as the levels rise. Where they cross from above even to below it is the market line, the board's single best read of the coming figure.
Next to the ladder, the last settled day shows where AAA's New Jersey average actually landed on the latest resolved date. Set it against the market line: the distance between them is the change the market is pricing for one day. Neither is fixed, since trades keep moving the line until the contract closes.
What Moves New Jersey Gas Prices
The Energy Information Administration counts crude oil as the biggest piece of the retail price of gasoline, and a move in crude reaches every state at once. The parts that belong to New Jersey are these.
Tax: New Jersey's gas tax is two taxes, the Motor Fuels Tax and the Petroleum Products Gross Receipts Tax, and since January 1, 2026 they total $0.491 a gallon on gasoline, according to the Department of the Treasury. The Motor Fuels Tax is fixed. The gross receipts tax is recalculated each year under a 2024 law, Chapter 7, so that fuel tax revenue meets the Transportation Trust Fund's statutory Highway Fuel Cap, after the State Treasurer and the Legislative Budget and Finance Officer review consumption by November 15.
Supply and blend: EIA groups New Jersey with New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia in the Central Atlantic subdistrict of the East Coast supply region, PADD 1B, and its weekly retail survey reports New Jersey inside that region rather than as a state of its own. Every one of New Jersey's 21 counties sits in a federal reformulated-gasoline area, according to EPA: the northern counties with the New York metropolitan area, the southern and central ones with Philadelphia-Wilmington-Trenton, and Atlantic, Cape May and Warren by opting in.
Calendar: EPA limits gasoline volatility at retail from June 1 to September 15, and EIA notes that summer demand generally lifts prices. The yearly gross receipts tax review, due by November 15, is the other fixed date on New Jersey's calendar.
New Jersey Gas Price History
The chart beside the board is the settled record: one point per day, each the New Jersey average as the daily contract read it from AAA. It starts with the contract for August 26, 2026, the first New Jersey date the exchange listed, so the all-available view begins there. The 7-day and 30-day windows slide forward each day and print the change from their first point to their last.
Weekly and Year-End New Jersey Gas Price Markets
New Jersey carries two longer gas boards on the same AAA average. The weekly board, New Jersey gas prices this week, names a Monday: each rung pays Yes if AAA's state average on that Monday is strictly above its level. The year-end board asks the same question of one reading, AAA's New Jersey average on December 31, 2026, so the path between now and then does not count, only where the year finishes. Both run on the AAAGAS terms that govern the daily contract.
Questions readers ask
What will gas prices be in New Jersey tomorrow?
That is the question the daily New Jersey board prices: each rung shows the odds that AAA's state average for the next date tops its level, and the market line marks where those odds cross even. Trading on each date runs until 11:59 p.m. Eastern the evening before, and the daily series has resolved every day since August 26, 2026.
Where does the New Jersey average gas price come from?
AAA computes a statewide New Jersey average for a gallon of regular every day and posts it, to a tenth of a cent, on gasprices.aaa.com. The contracts take the value posted at expiration on the named date, and a revision AAA makes afterwards does not change the result.
When do New Jersey gas price contracts settle?
Kalshi's AAAGAS terms close trading at 11:59 p.m. Eastern the day before the named date and settle the contract no later than the day after it expires, which happens once AAA's figure for the date is out. The weekly contract follows the same rule for its Monday, and the year-end contract for December 31, 2026.
What is the gas tax in New Jersey?
Since January 1, 2026, New Jersey taxes gasoline at $0.491 a gallon, the fixed Motor Fuels Tax plus the Petroleum Products Gross Receipts Tax, according to the Department of the Treasury. The gross receipts tax is recalculated each year under the 2024 Transportation Trust Fund law.
Are prediction markets legal in New Jersey?
New Jersey Predictions keeps a legal status page with the state's record on prediction-market exchanges, each filing and order with its date, and it draws no conclusion the record does not carry. Nothing on the site is legal or financial advice.
Will gas prices go down in New Jersey?
Read the board against the last settled day: a market line under AAA's latest New Jersey figure means the market expects a lower reading next, and a line above it means a higher one. For a longer horizon, the year-end ladder prices where the average finishes on December 31, 2026.
