New Jersey's Year-End Gas Ladder Is Pricing a Deeper Winter Drop Than the Calendar Usually Brings
The New Jersey year-end gas price market rests on a December 31 reading well under what drivers in the state were paying in late October: Kalshi's ladder on AAA's New Jersey average for regular puts the odds near even at the $3.80 and $3.90 lines, while AAA's own figure on October 23, 2026 was $4.1914 a gallon. What the price is saying is that the winter fall in New Jersey pump prices will run deeper than the seasonal drift alone usually delivers. The live board above carries every rung.
What the New Jersey year-end gas price market is asking
The contract asks one question at fourteen price levels: will AAA's statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline in New Jersey be strictly greater than the line on December 31, 2026? The lines run from $3.70 to $5.00 in ten-cent steps. Each is its own yes-or-no contract, and the reader's version of the question is simple: where does the state average finish the year?
It is a single number for the whole state. AAA publishes a New Jersey average to a tenth of a cent alongside separate figures for mid-grade, premium and diesel and for metro areas from Atlantic City to Bergen-Passaic; only the statewide regular average counts. On October 23, 2026 AAA listed that average at $4.1914, down from $4.2044 the day before, $4.2659 a week earlier and $4.4061 a month earlier. A year earlier it was $2.9556, which shows how far the 2026 market sits above the last one. AAA's record for the state is $5.0589, set on June 13, 2022.
Kalshi is the only exchange pricing this contract. Its New Jersey year-end event opened on October 1, 2026, and by October 23 it had matched about 298,900 contracts in all, about 37,800 of them in the previous 24 hours. A shorter-range version of the same question, the daily contract on the next day's AAA reading, runs on the New Jersey gas prices page.
Where the New Jersey year-end gas price ladder sits against AAA
Read from the bottom, the ladder treats a year-end average above $3.70 as close to settled: Kalshi had that rung at 98% on October 23, 2026, which means the market sees almost no route to a December 31 reading under $3.70. The next two rungs are where the question is decided. Kalshi had Over $3.8000 at 49% and Over $3.9000 at 49% on October 23, 2026, so the market treats a finish above or below that band as close to a coin flip.
Both lines sit well under the $4.1914 AAA reported on October 23, so the market treats a fall of that size over ten weeks as the middle of the range, not a stretch.
Higher up, the odds thin out slowly. Kalshi had Over $4.0000 at 34% and Over $4.1000 at 32% on October 23, 2026, which means the market gives roughly one chance in three that the state average ends the year above $4.00, still about 19 cents under the late-October figure. Then the board goes flat: every rung from Over $4.2000 to Over $4.5000 stood at 31% on Kalshi on October 23, 2026, before Over $4.6000 fell to 14% and the four lines from $4.70 up sat at 3% or lower.
A flat stretch like that is the ladder saying two things at once. Most of the weight sits below $4.00, consistent with a winter decline, yet close to a third of it sits above $4.50, a level above even AAA's month-ago reading of $4.4061. The market is not pricing a gentle glide from here; it treats the year-end number as a question with two shapes, a real fall or a climb back past the September highs.
Why New Jersey pump prices could fall that far by December 31
Two forces push the same way in the next ten weeks. The first is the season. Gasoline sold in the cooler months uses a winter blend that is cheaper to produce, and AAA tied the 6-cent drop in the national average to $4.2701 in the week to October 22, 2026 to that switch. The Energy Information Administration's weekly survey does not publish New Jersey on its own, but it does publish the Central Atlantic region that contains it, and the seasonal drift there has been modest. The regional average for regular fell from $3.064 on October 20, 2025 to $2.939 on December 29, 2025, and from $3.177 on October 21, 2024 to $3.066 on December 30, 2024, a slide of little more than a dime in each year.
That is the measure of what the calendar alone tends to deliver, and it is a long way short of the band the ladder treats as even. The rest of the expected decline has to come from the second force, crude oil, which the federal agency counts as the largest piece of the retail price. On October 22, 2026 AAA described crude as nearing $100 a barrel amid instability in the Strait of Hormuz, with West Texas Intermediate settling at $97.15 the day before. The market's even odds at $3.80 and $3.90 only make sense if a good part of that crude premium comes out of the price before New Year's Eve.
New Jersey's own tax does not change the arithmetic before then. The state's levy on gasoline has been $0.491 a gallon since January 1, 2026, the fixed Motor Fuels Tax plus the Petroleum Products Gross Receipts Tax, and the next annual adjustment under the 2024 law takes effect on January 1. Any change the Treasury announces this autumn lands the day after the contract reads AAA, so it cannot move the settlement number.
The case against the New Jersey year-end gas price read
The strongest case against the read is that the ladder's middle is thinner than its prices suggest. On October 23, 2026 the best bid and the best offer on Kalshi's Over $3.8000 contract sat more than 60 points apart, and several upper rungs had no standing bid at all. A coin-flip price on a contract with a spread that wide is a statement about where the last trades happened, not a firm consensus, and a modest order on either side could move the line where the ladder crosses even. The 31% that sits on every rung from $4.20 to $4.50 looks like the same thing: a block of resting offers rather than a market-tested estimate for each line.
The second argument cuts the other way on direction. AAA said on October 22, 2026 that the month was poised to be the most expensive October on record for gas nationally, after records in August and September, and crude near $100 a barrel is not a level from which a retail decline of that size arrives on its own. If the Strait of Hormuz stays unsettled into December, the dime-sized seasonal slide of the past two years may be all the state average gives back, which would leave New Jersey a little above $4.00 rather than near $3.80, a finish the ladder prices at about one chance in three. A reader who holds that view sees a market leaning on a crude decline that has not started.
What changes the New Jersey year-end gas price read
The read is wrong if the state average stops falling well above $4.00. These are the dated signals, each observable before the contract closes.
• The AAA daily figure: a New Jersey average still above $4.10 in mid-November would leave the even band at $3.80 and $3.90 needing a crude collapse in six weeks.
• Crude oil: a sustained move in West Texas Intermediate away from the $97.15 settle of October 21, 2026 is the input most likely to shift the whole ladder at once.
• The weekly federal release: the Central Atlantic regional average, dated each Monday, shows whether New Jersey's region is falling faster than its 2024 and 2025 pace.
• The Treasury's review by November 15: that review set this year's January 1 change to the gross receipts tax, and a new rate on the same schedule would start after the settlement date, so a gas-tax headline should not move this contract.
• The last trading day: trading closes at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on December 30, 2026, a day before the reading that settles it, so the late-December AAA figures are the last information the ladder can price.
When the New Jersey year-end gas price market resolves
Each rung settles on AAA's average price for regular gasoline in New Jersey on December 31, 2026, as AAA has documented it when the contract expires, which Kalshi lists for the morning of December 31. A rung pays Yes if that average is strictly greater than its line and No otherwise, so a reading of exactly $3.8000 is a No on the $3.80 rung. AAA revisions published after expiration are not counted, and if no figure exists for December 31 the contract uses the last day AAA does report. Trading ends at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on December 30, 2026, and Kalshi's terms set settlement no later than the day after expiration.
