Booker's 27-Point Win Was the Result the Senate Market Had Treated as Settled Since October

Kalshi had a Democratic hold at 99% on November 2, 2026 and Booker led Justin Murphy 62.1% to 35.3% in the unofficial count three days later, which means election night only measured a margin the board had stopped questioning.

Cory Booker won a third full term in the U.S. Senate on November 3, 2026, beating the Republican nominee, Justin Murphy, by about 27 points in the unofficial New Jersey Senate election results. The Associated Press declared Booker the winner at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, the moment the state's polls closed, and NBC News projected the same result.

As of 9:55 a.m. Eastern on November 5, 2026, the unofficial count that NBC News publishes from Associated Press data had Booker at 1,787,172 votes, or 62.1%, and Murphy at 1,015,941, or 35.3%, with an estimated 94.5% of the expected vote counted. Veronica Fernandez of the End the Corruption! Party had 47,222 votes and Joanne Kuniansky of the Socialist Workers Party 26,720, which means the two minor candidates together drew less than 3% of the count. For New Jersey the result keeps one of its two Senate seats with the Democrat who has held it since 2013, according to NBC10's candidate guide, and extends a run the AP noted in its race call: the state has not elected a Republican to the Senate since 1972.

The Senate market had already treated the race as decided. On the evening of November 2, 2026, the night before the vote, Kalshi had a Democratic win of the seat at 99% and Polymarket at 99.1%, while the Republican side was at 1% on Polymarket and 2% on Kalshi. By the morning of November 5, 2026, both venues quoted the Democratic side at 100% and the Republican side at 0%. The count therefore confirmed the price rather than moving it: the only thing the race added to what the board said on November 2 was the size of Booker's margin, which no contract on this board pays on.

What the Senate market priced before November 3

The Democratic price never left a narrow band in the five weeks before the election. Kalshi had it at 99% and Polymarket at 98% on October 9, 2026; both venues had it at 97% on October 19 and again on October 23, and Kalshi had it at 99% again on November 2. Over the same stretch the Republican side's best price sat between 1% and 3%. A price that moves two points in a month on a race that ends in a 27-point result is a market that had stopped asking who would win and was waiting for the count.

The price was not a judgment about Murphy alone. He is an attorney from Tabernacle with no prior elected office, according to NBC10's candidate guide, and he came out of a crowded Republican primary in June, the AP reported. The market's read rested on the state's record and on the incumbent's position as much as on the matchup: a Democratic senator seeking a third full term in a state that had not sent a Republican to the Senate in more than five decades. Polymarket's 1% Republican price on November 2, 2026 means the market saw roughly one chance in a hundred that the record would break, which is about as close to certainty as a two-candidate contract trades.

Where the New Jersey Senate count stands

The numbers above are unofficial and will change, because the count is not finished. NBC News estimated that 94.5% of the expected vote had been counted when its results page was last updated on the morning of November 5, 2026, with 2,877,055 votes recorded for the four candidates on the ballot. The New Jersey Division of Elections had not posted official general-election results that morning: the links to its official Senate, House and turnout reports for 2026 answered with "page not found", and its election-night page said the county results it carries were "currently being updated."

More ballots are still arriving by rule. The Division of Elections says a mail-in ballot counts if it is postmarked by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day and received by the voter's county board of elections within six days after Election Day, which for this election is November 9, 2026. Those ballots will add to every candidate's total and to the statewide turnout figure, but with Booker ahead by more than 770,000 votes, a lead far larger than the vote still expected, they do not put the winner in question. The share of the remaining vote is the thing to watch for the margin, and the early returns by method suggest late mail ballots favor Booker: in the count NBC News sorted by voting method, he had 76% of the ballots cast early by mail, against 61% of those cast on Election Day.

The final number matters to a second New Jersey market. The New Jersey Senate turnout market page covers Polymarket's contract on the total number of valid votes cast for senator, which resolves on the reported total and falls to its lowest bracket if the result is not definitively known by March 31, 2027. That board is still open, because the total is still growing as county boards finish their counts.

What the trading said about the race

The volume on the Senate board ran the other way from the result. By the morning of November 5, 2026, Kalshi had traded 406,592 contracts on the Republican side and 155,030 on the Democratic side, and Polymarket's two sides had drawn $21.3K and $20.7K. Kalshi counts contracts, not dollars, and a contract priced near 1% costs about a cent, so a long shot attracts far more contracts per dollar than a favorite does; the heavier Republican count says the long shot was cheap to trade, not that traders expected it to win. Neither venue had the Republican side above 4% on October 9, 12, 19 or 23 or on November 2, which means the volume and the price told the same story in different units.

The board also had little room to react to the campaign itself, as the story on the candidates' debate found on October 9, 2026. Between that date and November 2 the Democratic best price moved by no more than two points in either direction. The result fits that reading: when a seat is priced near certainty for a month, election night is a count, not a test.

What happens next

Booker's win is not the end of the board's paperwork. The Senate contract on both venues is written on whether a Democrat is sworn in as New Jersey's senator for the term that begins in 2027, and Prediction Genius lists the board's resolution date as January 4, 2027. The state's own next step is the count: county boards keep receiving and counting mail-in ballots through November 9, 2026, and the totals move toward official status only when the state publishes certified results, which the Division of Elections had not dated on its results pages as of November 5.

The rest of New Jersey's ballot produced closer results than the Senate race. Democrats took the 7th District from Rep. Tom Kean Jr., Rep. Jeff Van Drew conceded the 2nd District to Zack Mullock before the AP had called it, and the House delegation's final shape waits on that call. The district boards are gathered on the New Jersey elections hub, and the Senate race's own page, with the contract rules and the full history of the price, is the New Jersey Senate market page. The next dated beat for the Senate count is November 9, 2026, the last day a mail-in ballot postmarked by Election Day can arrive and still count.
