A New Jersey Race Market Pays on the Call, Weeks Before the Count Is Official
Short answer. A New Jersey election market usually settles on a media race call, weeks before the state certifies the count. That gap is why a result on this site reads unofficial until certification.

A New Jersey race contract is written on who takes office, and it is allowed to pay on who is projected to win. Kalshi's House contracts pay on the party of the first candidate who presents a certificate of election for the seat and is sworn in for the term beginning in 2027, and its Senate contract on the party of the person sworn in as a senator from New Jersey for that term; each carries a clause for accelerated determination once a consensus of media organizations projects the winner. Polymarket's district contracts resolve on the party of the winner as a consensus of credible reporting indicates. The money therefore settles on election night or soon after, and New Jersey's official result follows weeks later. Suppose, in an invented example, a district's Democratic contract trades at 90% the evening before the vote. After a call it pays in full or not at all, while the count that makes the result official is still being added up.
How a race contract settles step by step
1. The polls close and the counties count. Polls closed at 8:00 p.m. on November 3, 2026. The Division of Elections does not post official or unofficial results on election night; it points readers to the county results pages, so the first numbers anyone sees are each county's running tally.
2. News organizations call the race. Kalshi's House terms allow early resolution once at least four of eight designated media sources, The New York Times, the Associated Press, Decision Desk HQ, CNN, Fox News, NBC News, CBS News and ABC News, have declared a winner and none has issued a contradictory declaration. In the 7th District, Kalshi's market data shows its Democratic contract finalized at 10:06 p.m. Eastern on November 3, 2026, about two hours after the polls closed, and its Senate contract settled at 8:40 p.m. that night. Polymarket's NJ-07 outcomes were marked resolved by 12:54 a.m. on November 4.
3. The count keeps going after the money has moved. On the afternoon of November 6, 2026, NBC News's results page for the 7th District listed Rebecca Bennett as its projected winner with about 19,000 votes still estimated to be outstanding. Mail ballots postmarked by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day count if they reach the county board by November 9, 2026, and voters have until November 14 to return a cure form for a ballot with a defect.
4. The counties canvass and the state certifies. County boards of canvassers meet on November 18, recount applications are due by November 21, county clerks send official results to the Secretary of State by November 23, and the Board of State Canvassers must certify the general election results on or before December 3, 2026, according to the Division of Elections' 2026 timeline.
5. The contract's own end date comes later still. Kalshi's House and Senate contracts carry an expected expiration of January 4, 2027 and a latest expiration of November 3, 2027. If a member-elect changes party before being sworn in, the House terms resolve on the party the person belonged to on election day. Polymarket turns to the official results reported by the Federal Election Commission only if the reporting is ambiguous.
6. The label on the result. Until the state certifies, every vote total is a running count. A result on this site is therefore written as unofficial, with its source and the time it was read, and a winner is named only on a named news organization's race call or the state's own count. The word comes off when the returns are certified.
Where New Jersey readers stand
Whether a New Jersey resident can trade a race contract, and on which exchange, turns on the state's record on prediction markets, not on how the contract settles. This guide does not answer that and draws no conclusion about any venue; the record, with a date on each part, is on the legal status page. This guide is not legal advice and not financial advice, and it takes no view on any candidate or party.
Common misreadings
A settled contract means a certified result. It does not. A contract can pay on a media call while the official count is still weeks from certification, which is the whole distance between election night and December 3.
A concession settles the market. The written rules turn on a media call, the official result or the swearing-in, and a concession is none of those. In the 2nd District, Rep. Jeff Van Drew conceded on election night before the Associated Press had called the race, WHYY reported, and Kalshi's market data shows that district settling at 6:44 p.m. Eastern on November 5, 2026.
The numbers stop changing once a race is called. They keep moving as mail, provisional and cured ballots are counted. A call is a projection of who leads when counting ends, not the final count.
The election-eve price was a forecast of the margin. These contracts pay on a party, not on a margin, so a lopsided result and a narrow one settle the same way.

Every race page is gathered on the elections hub. A contract that settles on a measured number rather than a call is explained in the guide to New Jersey gas price markets.

Common questions
When does a New Jersey election market settle?
Usually soon after a media race call. Kalshi's House and Senate contracts allow accelerated determination once a consensus of media organizations projects a winner, and its 7th District and Senate contracts both settled on the night of November 3, 2026, weeks before certification.
When is the 2026 New Jersey general election certified?
The Board of State Canvassers must certify the general election results on or before December 3, 2026, after the county boards of canvassers meet on November 18, according to the Division of Elections' 2026 timeline.
Why is a New Jersey result called unofficial after the race is called?
Because a call is a projection and the count is not finished. Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can arrive through November 9, 2026, cure forms through November 14, and the totals become official only when the state certifies them.
Does a concession settle a prediction market?
No. The rules turn on a media call, the official result or the swearing-in. Rep. Jeff Van Drew conceded the 2nd District on election night, and Kalshi's contracts on the seat settled on November 5, 2026.
